ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
FHI 360 is a US-based NGO dedicated to improving lives in lasting ways by advancing integrated, locally driven solutions. FHI 360’s Crisis Response team is responding to the humanitarian emergency with the Ukraine Humanitarian Assistance Response Program (UHARP II), providing integrated health, nutrition, mental health, and protection programming to address critical needs of the population. FHI 360 is seeking a Nutrition Officer for an anticipated new nutrition project focused on improving infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices among pregnant and lactating women in health facilities and communities. The position is contingent upon confirmation of donor funding.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Under supervision of the Senior Nutrition Officer, the Nutrition Officer is responsible for supporting the implementation of FHI 360’s nutrition activities. The Nutrition Officer will ensure that IYCF program activities are evidence-based and adhere to technical standards in the nutrition field. The IYCF activities include provision of skilled lactation counseling for pregnant and postpartum women, building the capacity of health facilities to provide IYCF services through training and on-job mentorship of health workers, linking women to mental healthcare services with FHI 360’s psychologists, promotion of breastfeeding in communities and referral for skilled counseling, and supporting IYCF-related assessments and evaluations. The Nutrition Officer will support technical programs from assessment and conception through close-out and evaluation and will provide regular technical supervision of nutrition activities at project sites.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DELIVERABLES
- Support the planning and implementation of all nutrition activities.
- Conduct nutrition assessments at health facilities to assess IYCF needs. Ensure that assessment reports are completed and properly filed.
- Provide operational support to nutrition activities and field staff, including coordination with other departments (operations, security, logistics, finance), to ensure smooth and timely implementation of nutrition activities.,
- Provide technical supervision of nutrition activities through field monitoring visits.
- Support the implementation of routine data collection and reporting for nutrition activities.
- Support the capacity building of government health facilities to provide IYCF services, including coordination of service provision at key contact points for women (e.g., School of Parenting or routine immunization services).
- Support the planning and implementation of IYCF trainings for healthcare workers.
- Support the implementation of community-based IYCF services, including training and management of community-based health promotion volunteers in urban and rural areas who will provide breastfeeding information, identify women who need IYCF support, and refer for skilled counseling.
- Support an assessment of the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes in health facilities, mapping of lactation counselor staffing in health facilities, and qualitative assessment of the factors affecting a woman’s decision to breastfeed.
- Participate in national and sub-national nutrition coordination structures (nutrition TWG, health cluster, etc.).
- Liaise regularly with external stakeholder about nutrition programming (e.g., health facility management, oblast and city Departments of Health, NGOs, UNICEF).
- Compile weekly and monthly reports on nutrition activities.
- Produce regular reports and plans of activities to the Nutrition Program Manager and Senior Health Coordinator.
- Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in medicine, nursing, education, midwifery nutrition, or lactation/breastfeeding consultant qualification.
- At least 2 years of work experience in the field of nutrition and/or primary healthcare.
- Certification as a lactation counselor and experience providing IYCF counseling.
- Strong knowledge of technical standards and best practices in nutrition programming in humanitarian settings.
- Prior experience implementing or coordinating nutrition/IYCF programs with non-governmental organizations or UN agencies is an advantage.
- Fluent in Ukrainian. Proficiency in English will be an advantage.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills, especially in time management and prioritization, ability to multi-task, and attention to detail.
